In this study we have investigated air-sea exchanges in the Belgian coastal area located in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. Since 1980 the tropospheric aerosol contents for the trace elements Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn and for the reference elements Al , Fe, Na have been monitored on an intermittent basis from a maritime sampling platform (Light-Vessel West-Hinder; position: 51°23.5'N- 2°21.5'E, fig. 1). During 1981 sampling campaigns at sea were paralleled by sampling campaigns on land, in the coastal area (natural reserve De Blankaert, located at 20 Km inland), in order to allow for a better evaluation of the specific source or sink role of the sea. No major source of pollution exists between the maritime and the continental sampling sites. During these... |

Echinoderes higginsi sp.n. is described from shallow subtidal sand north of the mouth of the Westerscheldt estuary, The Netherlands. The species is compared with other species having the same spine formulac. It appears to be most closely related to E. kristenseni Higgins. 1983 and, to a lesscr extent. to E. riedli Higgins, 1966. Condyldres multispinosus (McIntyre. 1962) is reported from the same locality, the first report of this centroderid kinorhynch since the original description. Some additional information on E. levunderi Karling, 1954 is presented. The presence of lateroventral adhesive tubes on the fourth segment, lateral spines on segment 7 and small additional setae on segment 12 in the male is noted. Echinoderes canariensis Greeff, 1869 and E.... |

During a comprehensive study of the macro- and meiobenthos of the Kwintebank, a sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea, eleven female specimens of a cylindropsyllid, belonging to a new genus, were collected from one of the stations sampled. The station's coordinates are 51°18'00''N 2°40'10''E. The sediment at this stations is a pure, very well sorted, coarse sand (median grain size: 517 µm; sorting: 0.24; mud<63µm: 0%) with a harpacticoid community similar to the Leptastacus laticaudatus-Paramesochra helgolandica- community from the "Open Sea" Zone described by Govaere et al. (1980). All specimens have been deposited at the "Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Natuurwetenschappen", Vautierstraat 31, B-1040 Brussels, under no.... |

The nitrogen cycle between dissolved inorganic and organic matter, phytoplankton, zooplankton, non living particulate organic matter, and sediments is studied in the ecosystem formed by the Southern Bight of the North Sea. A consistent pattern of mean annual fluxes of nitrogen based on the primary production and the zooplankton grazing is set up. A mathematical model describing the dynamic behaviour of nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton and dissolved organic matter is proposed. The results of the simulation fairly well fit the recent observations made in the frame of the Math. Model Sea Research Programme. |

Four sperm whales (three subadult males stranded on the Belgian coast, a fourth older male found dead at sea) were analysed for total mercury, methylmercury and organochlorines. All four were part of a total of 24 sperm whales that stranded on the North Sea coasts over a period of six months, a highly unusual phenomenon. Total mercury levels ranged from 0.5 µg/g fw in kidney and 1 in muscle, up to 15 in liver. The finding of at least 90% of the mercury in its inorganic form confirms the existence of detoxification mechanisms in the liver of cetaceans. PCB concentrations in muscle, liver, kidney and blubber ranged from 10 to 25 µg/g lipids. These results are in the same order of magnitude as literature data, which however does not imply that there is no... |
